What ever happened to MK Dons defender Miguel Angel Llera?

Miguel Angel Llera arrived at Stadium MK in 2008 following Dons' promotion from League Two as champions.

Racking up 38 appearances, Llera stepped up alongside Sean O'Hanlon in the absence of Danny Swailes, who had been a regular in the previous season, but was limited to just two appearances in League One.

Llera arrived with La Liga experience at Gimnastic, but he made his name at Alicante where he made 112 appearances for the Segunda Division B side before earning a move to the Tarragona-based side. But after Gimnastic were relegated, he moved to Hercules but struggled to make an impact and left for England a year later.

Dons look set for back-to-back promotions but missed out on automatic promotion, and then lost on penalties in the play-off semi-final to Scunthorpe. While he was offered a new contract to remain at Stadium MK for 2009/10, he instead opted for a move to Charlton. Two seasons at The Valley saw him establish himself in the side, but was released at the end of his deal. It was at Charlton where he suffered a head injury which saw him play the remainder of his career with a protective head-guard on.

Remaining in England, the Spaniard impressed Championship side Blackpool during a trial, enough to earn a full-time contract, but he was immediately loaned to League One sides Brentford and Sheffield Wednesday. His spell at Hillsborough earned him a move there in January 2012, and helped the Owls to promotion to the Championship. Establishing himself as a cult hero, Llera got the reputation as a free-kick expert, as he netted 11 times in his 91 appearances for Wednesday.

Leaving the club in summer 2014, Llera spent a season at Scunthorpe before hanging up his boots, but he remained in England with a return to Wednesday as a coach and scout. Spells at Chesterfield and Sheffield FC and Hallam University, Llera spent time as a personal trainer before taking up his current role as the academy manager at Walsall.
