Olney’s poor end to the first half cost them last week against Market Harborough, and it was a similar story in Wigston seven days later.

After a fairly well-matched opening 23 minutes, Wyggs put themselves ahead thanks to a converted try from the left wing.

The lead was doubled nine minutes later when Wyggs, with the wind in their sails after scoring the opener, created a second try on the opposite flank to extend their lead to 14-0.

Olney were unable to get on the front foot and conceded a penalty that Wyggs used to gain a lineout 10m from the visitors’ goal line. Winning the ball, Oadby dived over to score their third try just before half time, and with the conversion, their lead was 21 points.

Just two minutes after the restart, Olney’s slim chances of getting anything from the game were dashed when the home side scored again to build a 26 point advantage.

The home side’s tactic of going hard at Olney’s defences was paying off, as several injuries hampered the visitors’ progress, and it was only a matter of time before they were in again, extending their lead to 33-0.

Olney gathered their resources and, in the last quarter of the game, they came close to getting some consolation. However it was not to be. Olney were awarded a penalty in Wygg’s ‘22’ and ran the ball. They were close to scoring when they lost the ball. Wygg’s picked up and ran the ball the length of the pitch to score a final try in the corner.
