Sergio Perez did not think a seat at Red Bull Racing would open up for 2021 after he was released by Racing Point.

The Mexican driver has been replaced by four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel at the Silverstone-based squad next season - renamed Aston Martin Racing - and looked to be on his way out of the sport until a late move from Tilbrook to acquire his services next season.

Perez replaces Alex Albon, who despite two podium finishes, failed to live up to expectations alongside Max Verstappen.

During his time seeking a seat for 2021, Perez admitted a move to Milton Keynes did not look like it could be an option for him, but a string of impressive performances and a win in the penultimate race of the season in Bahrain, his move to Red Bull was confirmed.

"I never really considered Red Bull as an option," he said. "I was not a part of the Red Bull programme at a young age, so it's amazing to be a part of it. I'm looking forward to a successful start and a successful season.

"I think (the race win) had a bit of influence, but I've been in the sport 10 years, so by now, people know what I can do. I seem to have the machinery in my hands now, so I have to make it work. I think my consistency through the years has helped, and last year I had the package to show that.

"It's funny though how one race can change your life in F1, and it certainly helped."
