With the circuit fast drying after an early downpour, Ricciardo stopped for dry tyres but arrived at his Red Bull Racing pit box and caught his crew unawares.

The Australian was left stationary while he waited for his tyres to arrive, allowing Hamilton to take the lead.

Despite a spirited fight from Ricciardo in the remaining 30 laps, Hamilton held on for the victory, as Ricciardo had to settle for second.

Meanwhile team-mate Max Verstappen drew a line under his disappointing weekend by crashing out at Casino Square. Verstappen, who became the youngest ever winner of a race at the Spanish Grand Prix last time out, had to start from the pitlane after crashing in qualifying.

Ricciardo’s podium finish, his first of the season, means he moves up to fourth in the championshop standings.
