Olney’s four-match winning streak came to an end on Saturday as they were beaten 24-6 at home to Belgrave.
In their first trip to Olney, the visitors used the strong wind from the off by putting play deep into Olney territory, an early try coming from their centre which was converted to put Olney behind 7-0 after just three minutes.
Olney attempted a reply but knocked on and were subjected to a torrid time in the resulting scrum. This was clearly an area of strength for Belgrave – Olney were penalised for offside and in the following scrum Belgrave drove the home side back to create an option for their centre to go over for his second try.
A series of penalties saw Olney gain ground but it was short-lived as Belgrave turned it over and kicked to halfway. The ball reached their winger from a scrum and once again Olney’s defence fell short, the converted try taking the visitors to a 17 -0 half time lead.
Olney got themselves on the scoreboard early in the second half courtesy of a Hawken penalty, but the game became a scrappy affair littered with penalties.
Fortunately for the home side, that went against the visitors more than themselves. Caught offside Belgrave were punished by a good kick considering the conditions. Hawken adding to Olney’s to make it 17-6.
Belgrave replied with another converted try almost immediately and this proved to be the final score, the visitors winning 24-6.
