Olney survive second half way to claim win

Rugby

Olney got their season off to a flying start with a 36-22 win over Huntingdon.

The host of new faces in the Olney side did not need time to gel, with the home side taking the lead after just 12 minutes courtesy of Brendan Burke, who converted it too.

Roger Shakespeare pulled a try back for the visitors, before Burke doubled up again to extend Olney’s lead to 14-5.

Joseph O’Connor added Olney’s third of the afternoon on 35 minutes, but when Dave Smith was sinbinned for 10 minutes, Huntingdon reduced the arrears to 21-10 at the interval when Chas Saunders scored.

The visitors forgot their kicking boots, with a third unconverted effort early in the second half, but Jordan Letts’ drop-goal took Olney’s lead to 24-15 after seven second half minutes.

When Huntingdon pulled it back to 24-22 though, Olney were determined not to let slip the win, with Harry James running in their next try before Freddie Betteridge added another try for Letts to convert and wrap it up.
