Young aces in national final

Milton Keynes’ future tennis stars battled it out on court at David Lloyd to become the final Grand Slam champion of the season.

While Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams celebrated wins in New York, the young tennis players battled it out in their own US Open to qualify for the David Lloyd Nationals.

Before the tournament got underway though, there was the small matter of the Bucks County Closed competition.

Joseph Norford played some inspired tennis coming through a field of 22 of the top juniors U8 in the county,.

Estelle Van Leeuwen overcame her friend and rival Bethan Miles 4-7, 7-5, 7-4, showing a good mixture of patience and power to become U9 girls champion.

In the boys U9, Calum Fairey beat Sonny Poulter and then Jack Shawyer before losing a tough battle to Miles Groom 4-7, 4-7 in the final.

In the U10 event Benjamin Ingram Moore was the boys winner and Rachel Ogunbayo won the girls’ event.

In the U9 tournament William Mottram won a close boys event on a count back over Calum Fairey and Thomas Ladyman - all three boys had the same number of wins so it came down to sets and games.

In the girls’ U9s Estelle Van Leeuwen was the winner.

In the U8 boys, Joseph won a close battle over Paul Whyte 11-9.

Joseph adds the US title to his French Open and Wimbledon tournaments.

In the girls’, Megan Brook was the winner, to follow her third place finish in the Beds County Closed the week.
