A deputy head teacher and her firefighter husband were on top form again as they raced at the Valencia Toro Loco Triathlon.
Claire Vallance, deputy head of Leighton Middle School, and her husband, Piers Vallance who works for Bucks Fire and Rescue Service, were on top form in Spain, with Claire coming away with a gold medal.
Claire had previously won the Sprint distance triathlon in Valencia, in 2011, and was keen to add the Olympic distance win to her Triathlon titles.
Despite mixed weather forecasts, the sun was shining in Valencia and 3,500 competitors from Spain, England, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands and USA took part in scorching hot weather.
The route included spectacular attractions including Valencia’s Marina “Real Juan Carlos 1”, the F1 Grand Prix track and the City of Arts and Sciences.
More than five minutes ahead of her nearest rival, Claire crossed the finish line in 2:20:37, winning the women’s Olympic distance title.
Piers was fifth overall, in a time of 2:08:30, a fantastic achievement.
But finishing just behind the man in fourth, Piers is determined to get on the podium next time.
The pair train at Bletchley Leisure Centre, but clearly prefer hotter climates - over Easter this year, the couple were in Grenada to compete in the International Triathlon, “Tri de Spice”, where they both stood on the top step of the podium.
