Will Tregurtha produced another excellent performance in the Ginetta Junior Championship at a packed Thruxton circuit last weekend as his championship challenge gathered further momentum.

The 16-year-old from Milton Keynes finished second in both of his two races and thrilled the thousands of spectators present at the British Touring Car meeting as well as the live ITV TV audience with some extraordinary overtaking.

Having qualified third Tregurtha engaged in a breathtaking 110mph scrap in race one with championship-leader Stuart Middleton throughout the nine laps around the fearsomely-quick Hampshire circuit. Middleton finally grabbed the win by just over one-tenth of a second.

And in race two Tregurtha again held the lead several times but was once more denied top step on the podium, this time by Kent’s Dave Wooder who crossed the line just three-tenths ahead. Both races proved a huge hit with the live crowd, those watching on TV at home and on social media.

In seven races so far this season, against 20 of the best young drivers in the country, Tregurtha has picked up one win, two second places, one third - and has not finished outside of the top five. He is now just 14 points behind Middleton in the battle for the title with 18 races still to go.

The Shenley Brook End School pupil, who is studying for GCSE exams in the next few weeks, said: “I’ve got to thank my team HHC Motorsport for giving me a great car this weekend. Obviously I am disappointed not to have picked up another win after coming so close but the races were great fun to be involved in and I think we gave everyone watching some good entertainment.

“We picked up a lot of points for the championship as well which is the main aim. All in all it was a really good weekend and two podiums in two races is a decent result.”
