Following a three-year run in London’s West End, audiences around the country will get the chance to enjoy Rock Of Ages The Musical as it embarks on a UK tour arriving at Milton Keynes Theatre tonight.
“It’s for everyone who just wants to have a really good time, and rock out,” says Ben Richards who stars as rock god Stacee Jaxx.
“It is a jukebox musical - we don’t shy away from that - we embrace that and take the mick out of ourselves religiously.”
Written by Chris D’Arienzo, the musical is a celebration of classic 80s rock culture, the show tells the story of a small town girl and a big city rocker falling in love to the greatest songs of the decade.
Featuring memorable tunes such as We Built This City, The Final Countdown, I Wanna Know What Love Is and Don’t Stop Believin’, the show brings its wild celebration of Los Angeles rock culture to the UK.
Ben said: “Essentially it’s good versus evil and boy meets girl with lots of story lines going on throughout it, but really it’s all about the great songs.
“When you hear that big guitar riff at the beginning of the show, you’re ready and you’re up for it.
“We get a lot of people in the audience coming back again and again because they love it so much.
When asked how he motivates himself to say the same lines again and again, Ben simply responds: “I get paid!”
But adds: “My job is to make it as fresh as possible, like I’m saying it for the first time.
“I have to concentrate and be focused, because if I’m not that’s when mistakes happen and things go wrong.
“People are spending a lot of money to come and see the show so I’ve got to make sure I’m giving them their money’s worth.”
Ben is best known for playing Bruno Milligan in ITV hit-television series Footballers Wives, along with roles in The Bill and Holby City, and as a regular judge on the BBC’s Strictly Dance Fever.
He said: “The joy of TV is that it is never dull, it’s always changing but you don’t get the joy of having a live audience so there are pros and cons for both of them. “I am lucky enough to be able to do both.”
Noel Sullivan, well-known as a member of the pop group Hear’Say, stars alongside Ben as Drew Boley, with his previous credits in the West End including Galileo in We Will Rock You and Danny Zuko in Grease.
