Royal & Derngate launches the third of its Comedy Gold productions, when Shakespeare’s best-loved comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes to the Royal stage from today to May 11.
Perfect both as an introduction to Shakespeare and for seasoned Shakespeare audiences, MND offers a feast of humour and magic.
This new production sets the action in Edwardian England, but mischief is afoot and the usual divides of upstairs/downstairs have been turned upside down. Worlds real and unreal collide, passion and madness erupt, love and magic work their potent charms and love at first sight proves real for some but makes an ass of others.
This rich, vivid production is a real treat for all ages. It’s directed by Gary Sefton ( A Christmas Carol, Diary Of A Nobody and Travels With My Aunt for R & D).
Taking the role of the fairy queen Titania is Amy Robbins, best-known as Dr Jill Weatherill in ITV series The Royal and fresh from starring in the West End as Mrs Johnston in Blood Brothers. Puck is Colin Ryan, from CBBC’s Leonardo, and Joe Alessi, last seen on the Royal stage in the hugely successful Brief Encounter, plays the part of Bottom.
