Health Secretary Matt Hancock launched an appeal yesterday (Tuesday) for 250,000 volunteers across the country to help the NHS during the coronavirus outbreak.

Under the GoodSAM scheme, their tasks will include collecting shopping and medication for the 1.5m people who are shielding from coronavirus, collecting patients from hospital and helping them settle back at home, and transporting medication, equipment and supplies between NHS sites.

Mr Hancock said: "We are seeking a quarter of million volunteers – people in good health – to help the NHS, for shopping, delivery of medicines and to support those who are shielded to protect their own health.

“The NHS Volunteer Responders is a new scheme set up so that people can come and help and to make sure that the NHS and local services that are needed get all the support that they can.”

Volunteers must be 18 or over, fit and well with no Covid-19 symptoms.

Most of the tasks they will be given can be undertaken while social distancing, but all volunteers will be given a "getting started pack" to include guidance on how to stay safe.

People can register on the NHS website here.

They will be asked to fill in a form with their details. Checks will then be carried out and then successful applicants will be given login details for the scheme.
