Local carers invited to free support event in Milton Keynes during national Carers Week

Milton Keynes residents who provide regular care for a friend or family member are invited to join a free support event and make use of the specialist services on offer.

To mark national Carers Week, the ‘Carers Support Event’ will give local people opportunities to speak with professionals and learn about the different support available. The free event will take place at Simpson Day Centre (MK6 3AF) on Wednesday, June 10 from 11am to 1pm. It’s open to all MK residents, as well as their friends and family who want to learn more.

A wide range of organisations including Age UK, Healthwatch and the NHS will be on hand to answer questions and provide information, as well as services from across the City Council.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet representatives from Citizens Advice and Alzheimer’s Society, who are part of the City Council’s dedicated Carers Support Service which was launched last year.

The service provides a range of specialist support for unpaid carers of all ages, which can be accessed face-to-face, on the phone or online.

Carers can get help to unlock money and benefits, make plans for emergencies, access housing options and much more. There are also opportunities for guests to meet other carers in similar situations.

The City Council estimates that there could be 21,000 unpaid carers in Milton Keynes. That includes many young carers who look after family members who could not cope without their help. This may be due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction.

Councillor Donna Fuller, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health, Community and Housing said: “If you’re caring for someone who lives in Milton Keynes, this event is a great opportunity to get the support you deserve.

“We know caring can be challenging, so it’s important everyone feels connected, informed and supported. You’ll be able to speak directly with local services, meet others in similar situations and discover the help that’s available, including our latest support offer. We look forward to welcoming you.”

There is limited free parking outside Simpson Day Centre on Simpson Road and several other carparks within a few minutes’ walk. Light refreshments will be available throughout the event.

The City Council provides a minimum direct payment of £240 for unpaid carers alongside access to additional assistance that will vary for individuals.
