Milton Keynes pedestrian crossing is a “tragedy waiting to happen” says local mum

A pedestrian crossing across a high speed dual carriageway is causing safety concerns as multiple residents share incidents of near misses on social media.

Milton Keynes mum, Emily Hills, raised concerns about a pedestrian crossing on the H3 where it meets Willen Road, after a bike ride with her family almost ended in tears.

She claims that on two occasions her family could have been hit by cars that had missed the appearance of the green man and red traffic light at the crossing.

But Milton Keynes City Council says that the roundabout meets current regulation standards.

Emily claimed that in one instance a car had to use an emergency stop to avoid hitting her husband and older son, and in the other a car had continued to drive straight through the red light while Emily and her younger son were waiting to cross. Fortunately, they were paying close attention and waited for the car to pass.

Emily said: “This crossing is a tragedy waiting to happen. If it had been older children out without an adult attempting to cross the road at either of these times, it's highly likely they would have started to cross when the green man showed up, with catastrophic consequences.”

Emily shared her experience on Facebook and the post was flooded with comments from people who said they had experienced similar near misses at the same crossing, with 78 comments currently on the post.

Emily added: “Obviously I'm not a road safety expert, but a pedestrian crossing across a high speed dual carriageway should never have been allowed in the first place.

“From comments made on my original post on facebook, people raised this at planning meetings but cost was given priority over the safety, and effectively lives, of our community.”

A spokesperson from the Milton Keynes City Council added: “Marsh End Roundabout was designed and constructed in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) requirements for roundabouts and signalised roundabouts.

“The junction provides suitable visibility of the traffic signals, with clear road markings and signage in place for approaching drivers.”

The spokesperson added that road safety audits have previously been completed for the junction and no concerns were raised about the visibility of the crossing.

Emily said she has reported her concerns to the council, but only received what seemed to be an automated response, saying they have referred it to the highways team. No further actions have been made.

Emily explained: “In my opinion, the only way to make it safer for pedestrians would be to follow the original plan and have a bridge to cross this section of the H3.

“This would obviously take time and, in my opinion, based on my own experience, there is an immediate danger to life.

“Perhaps a road sign could be implemented in the meantime, next to the football pitch, to warn drivers of the pedestrian crossing immediately after their roundabout exit.”

The City Council spokesperson said: “While we understand the concerns raised, the audits and inspections undertaken have not identified any issues with the design or visibility of the crossing.

“We would, however, remind all drivers of their responsibility to obey traffic signals and remain aware of pedestrians using the crossing facilities.”
