Surprise postbox topper gives ‘heartwarming reminder’ of those who served in WW2

A duo of yarn bombers has adorned a local postbox with a topper commemorating the work of the World War Two Codebreakers of Bletchley Park.

The colourful crochet and knitted artwork appeared by surprise outside the gates of the famous museum and heritage attraction ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

The display models a Bombe machine and members of the British women's military service branches ATS, Wrens and WAAF, surrounded by red poppies.

It was made by Clare Reeves, a Bletchley Park Trust Learning Session Leader and her friend, Amanda Vines who volunteers at The National Museum of Computing.

Clare said: “I think it’s important to have something that honours those who died during conflict as a way of helping to keep their story alive and to help younger people engage in this history.

Clare, who is currently creating a gaggle of Christmas gonks ahead of festive activities at Bletchley Park, added: “This is our fourth postbox topper after we also made one for VE Day.

“My hope is that this small act of creativeness helps to spark an interest for future generations, local residents and beyond, to get involved in learning about heritage and culture which is right on their doorstep.”

Rebecca Foy, Director of Public Engagement at Bletchley Park Trust, said: “Clare and Amanda’s creations are always very impressive and have a way of making people smile. They always serve as a heartwarming reminder to honour the men and women who worked at Bletchley Park and beyond.”

The Remembrance Day parade will begin at 10am from Bletchley Park this Sunday, November 8. You can plan your visit and book tickets at the Bletchley Park website.
