A look ahead to MK Dons' clash with old rivals Peterborough United

Previewing MK Dons’ clash with Peterborough United at Stadium MK, kicking off at 3pm

MK Dons and Peterborough United reignite their rivalry on Saturday when Posh visit Stadium MK for the first time in four years.

The pair had been regular opponents down the years, with this weekend’s game set to be the 31st clash between the sides since 2004. During those years, the sides have fought for league titles promotion, automatic promotion, in the play-offs and against relegation, with a few Cup and EFL Trophy contests thrown in for good measure too.

Peterborough have edged the games overall, winning half of the 30 games, while Dons have ten victories to their name, the last of them though came in bizarre circumstances. Reduced to ten men when Joe Walsh was sent off just nine minutes into the game in December 2017, Dons took the lead through Chuks Aneke in the first-half before the Stadium MK crowd were stunned by another red card, this time for Osman Sow ten minutes before the break. An onslaught from Posh followed in the second-half, but Dons held on for the win.

Neither side have made eye-catching starts to the season. While Dons are still seeking their first win of the season since winning promotion back to League One, drawing four of their opening five games, Posh have lost three, but have a win and a draw to their name, but start the day below their opponents on goal-difference.

Last time out, Dons shared a dramatic 3-3 draw with Wycombe, which saw them come from 2-0 to lead 3-2 at one stage, while Peterborough were beaten 2-1 at home by fast-starting Sheffield Wednesday.

Former Dons assistant head coach Luke Williams currently leads Peterborough having taken over at London Road 11 months ago, while Player of the Year Liam Kelly made the switch to Cambridgeshire on the eve of the new campaign. Meanwhile Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, who has made just one substitute appearance for Dons this season, featured in the 2011 play-off games which saw Posh book their spot in the Wembley final.

Referee Scott Oldham will take charge of the game on Saturday, his fourth outing of the season. So far, he has shown eight yellow cards, no reds and is yet to award a penalty.

He has reffed Peterborough 15 times (W9 D4 L2) and Dons 12 times (W6 D1 L5). Dons last saw him in their emphatic 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers last October, while he over Peterborough’s 2-0 home defeat to Luton in August 2025.

Assistants Daniel D'Urso and Daniel Bonneywell will run the lines with Fourth Official Thomas Harty.
