Dramatic draw a 'bitter pill' for Warne despite Dons' remarkable comeback

The MK Dons head coach spoke after his side’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday

Leaving Adams Park without the three points left a bitter taste in the mouth of MK Dons boss Paul Warne, despite overturning a 2-0 half-time deficit to Wycombe Wanderers.

In a dramatic 3-3 draw in south Buckinghamshire, Dons scored three times in eight second-half minutes after Dan Casey and Ewan Henderson gave the Chairboys the lead, with Aaron Collins, Callum Paterson and Curtis Nelson giving the travelling 1,300 fans a reason to turn their boos into cheers on 58 minutes.

But the dangerous Jayden Wareham, who proved a thorn in the side all afternoon, got a goal on his Wycombe on his debut to snatch the draw with 16 minutes to go.

After a miserable performance against Wigan three days earlier, Warne said the draw was a ‘bitter pill’ to swallow.

“It had everything but the three points we came for, which is pretty disgusting,” he said. “I was happy with some, not happy with a lot. But if you go 2-0 down away from home and come away with something, you have to give the lads massive credit.

“They got booed off at half-time, and I might have started the booing. We thoroughly deserved to get booed off in a local derby. We just didn’t defend the set-pieces, and if we did, we’d have been handsome.

“I’m massively disappointed because set-piece goals are just non-negotiable for us. That should never happen. Take out the set-pieces, I don’t think Wycombe had much of a threat. Then we conceded one chance in the second-half and it went in.

“It feels like a bitter pill. It would’ve been great to come away with a 3-2 win, but looking at other results, it’s a crazy league.

“You question the team’s character all the time during the season, but to win that second-half 3-1 was pretty impressive. That’s the frustration.

“We should’ve played with a bit more personality in the first-half, we made changes and I think we were better in the second-half, but I’m not skipping back to my car full of joy. We’ve got a few issues we need to address.”
