Gilbey to have a scan on injured knee after concerning Maidenhead blow

The MK Dons skipper is a concern after his knee injury picked up against Maidenhead

Captain Alex Gilbey will have a scan on his knee today (Saturday) to establish the severity of the knee injury he suffered less than ten minutes into the first pre-season game of the summer last night.

Damerai Singh-Hurditt had already fired MK Dons into the lead against Maidenhead United before Gilbey went to ground blocking a shot three minutes into the game, giving an uncharacteristic yell in pain before receiving treatment.

While he left the field under his own steam, he was strapped up and heavily limping as he exited York Road following the full-time whistle, and will meet with doctors ahead of Sunday’s flight to Croatia to help discover his fate for the rest of pre-season.

“The disappointment of the evening was obviously Gilbey going down after a few minutes,” said head coach Paul Warne afterwards. “He fell awkwardly after some contact in the box, and it looks like he’s damaged his knee. The severity of it we don’t know.

“He’ll have a scan (on Saturday) and it doesn’t look worst-case scenario and we’re hoping it won’t be too bad.”

Gilbey watched on as second-half substitutes Jack Perniskie and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy found the back of the net in the comfortable 4-1 win, which Warne said was more about giving his side a run-out than anything else.

He continued: “It was a good work out at the end of a tough week. We haven’t done much ‘coachy’ with the team all week, it’s just been physical so they’re a bit leggy. We played two different systems, but it was just about getting everyone 45 minutes.

The performances of the younger players too pleased Warne. Brooklyn Kazungu, who replaced Gilbey early on, was one of the stand-outs during his cameo, while Singh-Hurditt and Perniskie both made big impressions on the head coach with their well-taken goals.

Warne added: “The young lads did really well, Brooklyn was possibly the outstanding one but it was good to see Damerai and Jack score, I thought Jack really led the line well, and it was pleasing to see Rush get a couple of goals too.”
