Half-time boos helped inspire MK Dons comeback, goal-scorer Paterson admits

Scottish frontman Callum Paterson spoke after Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Wycombe Wanderers

Goal-scorer Callum Paterson felt bittersweet after MK Dons overturned a 2-0 deficit to lead against Wycombe Wanderers only to come away with only a point in a 3-3 draw.

The Scot was introduced to the action at half-time with his side trailing to goals from Dan Casey and Ewan Henderson, and netted the equaliser five minutes after Aaron Collins’ 50th minute rocket, before Curtis Nelson’s header three minutes later put the visitors in front at Adams Park. Jayden Wareham got a goal on his Wycombe debut with 16 minutes to go to deny Dons victory.

Having been booed off at half-time, Paterson said responding to that reaction from the 1,300 travelling supporters was important early in the second-half, but Wycombe’s equaliser towards the end took the shine off their comeback.

“I wish I could tell you what was said at half-time,” he said. “Coming off to boos at half-time is never a good thing, but we all deserved it, and that was the first time we said at the break. We had to make it up, not just to the gaffer and ourselves but to the fans.

“Thankfully, we came out all guns blazing and got ahead, which made a little bit of amends.

“Conceding in the way we did was a little bit annoying. It was what the gaffer and the fans wanted at half-time, but then to concede at the end just showed a little bit of naivety.

“It wasn't the best performance, but we’ll take the comeback.”

Two of Wycombe’s goals came by way of set-pieces, which was a great bugbear of Paterson afterwards.

He continued: “Our strong point has been setplays, both attacking and defending them. We don’t base our game off that but it’s a massive part of our game so to concede two goals for us is the worst thing that can happen. I didn’t think we played too bad, we weren’t great but we weren’t too bad, but the set plays let us down.”

Still seeking their first win on their return to League One, the draw lifted Dons to 18th, above Peterborough, AFC Wimbledon and Bromley - their next three opponents - but with four wins and a defeat from their opening five games, Paterson said Warne’s men have to start winning games.

“It’s too many draws,” he added. “We have to start afresh from here, get the draws out the way. We’ve had a tough start on paper, but we need to rectify that now and start getting some wins.”
