Latics put dreadful MK Dons to the sword
League One: Wigan Athletic 3-1 MK Dons
A dismal performance from MK Dons saw them comfortably beaten 3-1 at the hands of Wigan Athletic, who picked up their first points of the season.
Turning in a miserable showing in the first-half especially, Paul Warne's side were lucky to only be 1-0 down at the break after Jensen Weir's first of two goals. The second came early in the second-half thanks to Max Power's excellent half-volley from the edge of the box, before Weir put the game firmly out of reach with 15 minutes to go.
Aaron Collins came off the bench to get a consolation for Dons but it was a miserable night for the Dons supporters, who made their feelings known at full-time.
For the first time this season, Paul Warne made changes to his side for the trip to Greater Manchester. Jack Sanders and Ryan Barnett were handed their first starts, while Callum Paterson, who started in the Carabao Cup defeat to Norwich City, also came into the side. Gethin Jones, Marvin Ekpiteta and Aaron Collins dropped onto the bench.
Neither of Dons’ deadline day signings - Ibby Fullah and Eli Campbell - were signed in time to make the squad.
Taking on a Wigan side with three defeats to their name in the first three games, Dons made the Latics look like world beaters for the majority of the opening 45 minutes, turning in one of the worst performances since Warne took over.
Defensively at sea, Sanders was lucky to remain on the field at the break after a string of poor tackles saw him into the book and living a charmed life. Too often Dons struggled to control the ball, could not pick a pass and looked void of ideas other than playing hopeful long-balls for Paterson and Nombe to chase.
The home side looked to capitalise on their opponents' dismal showing and should have been high and dry by half-time. Twice, Fraser Murray got in behind and forced Craig MacGillivray into saves, while Jensen Weir somehow wasn't able to wheel off in celebration when his strike hit the post and rolled across the goal-line before it was eventually cleared.
Weir though would score a cracker nine minutes before the break, left unchallenged 20-yards out to beat MacGillivray and give Wigan the lead.
Dons did not appear to jolt into life until the final five minutes of the half, when Paterson poked over from close range and Nombe's header forced keeper Joe Whitworth into a save.
Warne made changes at half-time in a bid to get his side back into game, with skipper Alex Gilbey and defender Marvin Ekpiteta replacing the ineffective Ben Wiles and Sanders in the last chance saloon, but just three minutes after the break, Wigan had doubled their advantage.
It came courtesy of another cracking finish, this time from Max Power who was left unmarked on the edge of the box following a half-cleared corner, hitting it on the half-volley to beat MacGillivray.
While not looking as disconnected as they did in the first-half, there was not a vast amount to suggest Dons could get back into things, though there were sights of goal for Barnett and Gilbey, though neither really tested keeper Whitworth.
And with 15 minutes to go, Wigan put the game to bed with another fine finish from Weir. A neat cross from the left-flank was touched into his path by debutant Brad Burrowes, with the midfielder firing from the edge of the box, clipping the inside of the post on it's way in.
The visitors managed to get themselves a consolation with nine minutes to go when substitute Aaron Collins was put through on goal and neatly beat Whitworth but it was as good as they got.
