Warne 'cannot see' Player of the Season Kelly making Posh switch
MK Dons boss Paul Warne was firm in his assessment of the move
MK Dons’ Player of the Year Liam Kelly has been subject of a bid from Peterborough United, but head coach Paul Warne does not foresee it going through as it stands.
The midfielder, who signed a new contract with the club in the summer after playing a key role in their promotion back to League One last season, featured in Dons’ 2-0 win over Cheltenham Town on Saturday, their final pre-season game before the campaign kicks off next week against Norwich City in the Carabao Cup.
Ahead of the game though, a move from League One rivals Peterborough was tabled for the 30-year-old.
Warne, speaking in Gloucestershire, confirmed the bid had been put in for Kelly but said in it’s current guise, it would not be going through.
“I do believe a bid came in, I don’t know how much for,” he said. “Three things have to happen for a deal to go ahead: the player wants to go, the manager allows him to go and the owner is happy with the bid. As it stands at the moment, I don’t think any of those are the case.
“I cannot see it happening, however, I bet Newcastle couldn’t see Eddie Howe leaving either. Crazy things can happen in football.
“As it stands today, Kells started today and has been excellent all pre-season, and he continues to be our player until those three things change.
“Liam has been great for me, so I don’t know why anyone would think we want to move him on. He won our Player of the Year last season in about 12 different categories, he played virtually every minute he has been standing up. He has been great.
“As we stand now, I don’t see any legs in it.”
