Warne won't get complacent about promotion chances despite big step

The MK Dons head coach spoke after his side’s 2-1 win over league leaders Bromley on Saturday

Dons boss Paul Warne still feels there is another twist to be had in the League Two promotion race despite his side taking a huge step towards a top three finish on Saturday.

The 2-1 win over league leaders Bromley saw Dons close the gap at the top of the table to four points with three games remaining, ahead of third place Cambridge’s clash with fourth place Notts County at the Abbey Stadium.

And it turned out to me an emphatic victory for Neil Harris’ side as they battered County 4-0, despite being down to ten men for 50 minutes.

Swindon’s 3-0 defeat to Colchester on Friday night and Salford’s 0-0 draw with Gillingham on Saturday mean Dons are now two points clear of Cambridge in third, four clear of Notts County in fourth and five clear of both the Robins and the Ammies in fifth and sixth respectively.

With the U’s set to face the Ravens this week too, the table could look much different by the time Dons kick off against Crewe next Saturday, but Warne is still wary of another twist.

“It’s another game gone, and we haven’t dropped out of the top three,” he said. “There are probably five teams going for three spots. It’s just rolling it on. Bromley’s next game is on Thursday against Cambridge and they both can’t win, so the more of them the better.”

Asked whether the win has put one foot in League One, he continued: “Definitely not. I feel we are closer though. I’ve always said I’m going for the title, and I always back my team but there feels like there will be another twist and a turn. It doesn’t feel like there’s one foot in League One yet, not at the moment.”
