"You have to take your chances": Warne on Dons' win over Accrington
Head coach Paul Warne spoke after MK Dons’ victory over Accrington Stanley
Clinical first-half finishing from MK Dons pleased Paul Warne as his side cruised to a 2-0 win over Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
Ben Wiles and Aaron Collins converted Dons’ only chances of the half against John Doolan’s side, before keeping the hosts firmly at arm’s length throughout the second, in fact coming closer to extending their lead as they took the win with relative ease.
“I’m really pleased with the clean sheet and doing it away,” said Warne afterwards. “Both our goals were really well taken. You just have to take your chances, that’s football in a nutshell.
“The first one went through to Wiles, he’s so quick so when the keeper didn’t come, he tucked it away nicely. It was great for him to start off his career here, and then Jon Mellish weighed the ball for Aaron Collins and for anyone at the club for it to drop to, you’d want it to be him.”
Accrington’s form of late, losing just twice since the middle of October, is not reflected by their 14th place league position heading into the game, with the Wham Stadium a tough place to come in recent months.
“It’s a difficult place to come, Accrington are really good,” Warne continued. “They press you, they’re brave and leave you one-on-one, and you have to be good enough to make the right decisions and the right times. We have done and we’ve come away with three points.
“In the end, the final 20 minutes just sort of faded away, I don’t think we were under any pressure. I’m really happy to get the win.
“We were a lot more dangerous in the second-half, and we all worked hard for the clean sheet and the win. This is a really difficult place to come and win a football match.”
