Milton Keynes among UK cities where pensions last around a decade

Retirement savings don’t tend to run out evenly across the UK. In some places, a pension can stretch comfortably into the later years of retirement, while in others it barely gets past the first decade. The difference is often less about how much people have saved and more about what everyday life actually costs once rent, bills, and basics are taken into account.

This analysis, conducted by The Investors Centre, estimates how long retirement savings last across UK cities by comparing retiree-adjusted private pension wealth with annual living costs. Costs include rent, utilities, food, transport, internet, and council tax, with a fixed State Pension income of £11,500 per year deducted to calculate net annual spending. Pension wealth is then divided by this net figure to estimate how many years savings would last under local cost conditions.

Milton Keynes ranks as the 23rd UK city where retirement savings run out the fastest, with pensions expected to last around 10.50 years. That places it outside the top 20, but still in the group where retirement savings are typically used up in around a decade.

What stands out in Milton Keynes is the balance between relatively high pension wealth and moderate living costs compared with major cities. Average annual rent sits at around £21,930, which is lower than London and many southern cities, but still contributes significantly to overall retirement spending.

Even with an estimated retiree-adjusted pension wealth of £202,500, total annual living costs reach £30,783. After the State Pension is taken into account, retirees still need to cover £19,283 per year from their own savings, which reduces how long pension pots last.

Milton Keynes sits in a middle band of UK cities where costs are not as extreme as London or Bath, but still high enough to limit long-term retirement sustainability compared with northern England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

When compared with lower-cost areas, the difference is clear. In cities such as Sunderland, Stoke-on-Trent, and Wrexham, retirement savings can stretch well beyond 15 to 20 years, showing how strongly housing and local living costs shape retirement outcomes.

The following cities are where retirement savings are projected to run out the fastest, based on average retiree-adjusted pension wealth and local living costs:

  1. London - 4.35 years

  2. Bath - 6.30 years

  3. Bristol - 6.93 years

  4. Edinburgh - 7.17 years

  5. Manchester - 7.39 years

  6. Gloucester - 7.57 years

  7. Glasgow - 7.64 years

  8. Oxford - 7.97 years

  9. York - 8.33 years

  10. Cambridge - 8.62 years
