Council proposing 20mph speed limits on 26 roads in Milton Keynes estate

Drivers could face a 20mph limit across 26 roads in a Milton Keynes estate under council proposals prompted by residents’ safety concerns.

Milton Keynes City Council wants to introduce the zone throughout residential streets in Browns Wood, linking it with the existing 20mph area in neighbouring Old Farm Park.

Residents have until November 5 to comment on the plans, which have yet to be finalised.

The proposed restrictions would cover the entire length of roads including Holst Crescent, Sullivan Crescent, Elgar Grove, Morley Crescent and Twyford Lane.

The council says the scheme follows requests from residents concerned about road safety and vehicle speeds.

It argues a lower limit would help protect pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users, while reducing the potential risk and severity of collisions.

But its own traffic surveys indicate that vehicle speeds are already generally low across the estate.

In its statement explaining the proposals, the authority says this reflects the layout of residential streets and their tight junctions.

It says the proposed limit would therefore formalise and reinforce an environment already suited to lower speeds.

The estate also has traffic-calming features which the council says support a 20mph restriction.

The authority argues the change would encourage walking and cycling by making journeys within the estate safer and more attractive for residents, children and visitors.

The council says connecting Browns Wood with Old Farm Park’s existing zone would also create a more consistent speed limit across the neighbouring communities.

Zone entry signs and repeater signs would mark the restrictions.

The council says it would continue monitoring the road network and consider further measures where necessary following consultation with relevant stakeholders.

The proposed traffic order is currently subject to statutory consultation, giving residents an opportunity to support the scheme or submit objections.

Comments or objections, including the reasons for them, should be emailed to[email protected], quoting reference TRO-488.

They can also be posted to the Traffic Regulation Order Team at Milton Keynes City Council, Civic Offices, 1 Saxon Gate East, Central Milton Keynes, MK9 3EJ.

Responses must arrive by November 5 and will be considered before any implementation of the scheme.
