Grieving Milton Keynes dog owner ‘in bits’ as she struggles to cover vet bills of over £6.5k
A pensioner who recently lost her dog after a tragic accident, is grappling with emergency vet and cremation fees having already shelled out more than £4,300 in vet bills.
A grieving pet owner from Milton Keynes is devastated after losing her dog following a simple accident on June 27.
Nina Carter's 68-year-old mother was walking her mini Pomeranian, Sandy, when a neighbour's dog escaped through a cat flap.
She knew the neighbour was in hospital, so she tried to help by taking Sandy off the lead and tying it to the neighbour's dog instead. She then picked Sandy up as she was small enough to hold.

Unfortunately, the neighbours dog pulled hard on the lead, jolting Nina’s mother and causing Sandy to slip from her arms. Sandy fell, breaking her leg, which changed both of their lives forever.
Sandy was too small for pins, so vets had to amputate the leg. But the wound became infected and her temperature soared past 40 degrees, leading to her being readmitted for treatment.
But sadly her body was too weak to fight the infection and Sandy died on Saturday, July 11.
The owner’s daughter, Nina, said: “My mum was devastated and of course blaming herself! Although all she was trying to do was keep the loose dog safe.”
Nina added that her mum is "in bits" over the sudden loss.
On top of the emotional devastation this has caused Sandy’s owner, she is now grappling with the huge financial pressure of vet bills.
To make matters even worse, she had cancelled Sandy’s pet insurance just one month before the accident after hearing stories about pet insurance not covering most illnesses.
Sandy’s owner now faces bills for emergency out-of-hours fees, X-rays, sedation, the operation, re-admission, euthanasia and cremation. That’s on top of the £4,318 she had already spent after Sandy’s accident. Altogether, she will need to pay a total of £6,629, without including the cost of a casket.
Her daughter Nina has now set up a fundraiser to help cover the mounting costs.
Nina added: “I feel it’s the only way to try to help my mum who is a pensioner now and lives on her own, to try to pay towards the ever growing vet bills.”
