Investment of £162,000 for Milton Keynes hospital welcomed by city MPs

City MPs have welcomed government funding for a Milton Keynes hospital in addition to a new £500m hospital coming to the city.

A sum of £162,000 in government funding will provide clean power upgrades at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH), helping to cut energy bills and reinvest savings into frontline NHS services. The recent announcement was welcomed by Milton Keynes MPs Callum Anderson, Chris Curtis, and Emily Darlington.

The government revealed that nearly 200 NHS sites are set to benefit from funding delivered jointly with Great British Energy. The funding builds on the work of Great British Energy’s solar for schools and hospitals programme, aimed at wasting less money on energy bills and directing resources back into patient care.

The clean power upgrades are estimated to save the NHS nearly £30 million a year on energy bills, as well as benefiting a number of military sites across the country.

Tony Marsh, Director of Estate & Facilities at MKUH, said: "We welcome the support from the National Energy Efficiency Fund, which has enabled us to replace outdated lighting across key areas of the hospital with modern LED systems.

"These upgrades improve lighting for staff and patients, cut energy use, and support our commitment to running a more efficient, sustainable site."

The investment comes in addition to the new £500 million hospital coming to Milton Keynes - a major project that will transform healthcare services in the city and North Buckinghamshire. The hospital is expected to be built between 2027 and 2030, to provide modern, state-of-the-art facilities and meet the needs of the city’s growing population.

Chris Curtis MP (Milton Keynes North) said: “This funding shows Labour’s commitment to a cleaner, more efficient health service that works for everyone. Not only are we delivering a new hospital at MKUH, but we’re also delivering healthcare fit for the 21st century.”

Emily Darlington MP (Milton Keynes Central) said: “I was proud to campaign on our manifesto which – quite rightly - placed a strong emphasis on reforming the NHS. It’s one of the things that we should be most proud of as a nation, but it can and should be run more efficiently.”
