A look ahead to MK Dons' final home game of the season against Tranmere Rovers
Previewing MK Dons’ final home game of the season against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, kicking off at 12.30pm
Automatic promotion and indeed top spot in League Two could be secured on Saturday when MK Dons take on Tranmere Rovers, but so could safety for the visiting side.
A win for Paul Warne’s side will secure their spot in League One next season as well as leapfrogging current league leaders Bromley with one game to go.
While the majority of fans at Stadium MK will have their eyes on the top end of League Two, the visiting support for Tranmere will also be watching the bottom end. Pete Wild’s side ended a 12-game win-less streak on Tuesday night with a vital 3-1 win over Cheltenham Town, a victory which moved them four points clear of the drop zone with six left on offer. A win for Rovers would certainly secure their safety, but a draw or indeed defeat could still save their league status depending on results around the country on Saturday.
It has been a season to forget for Tranmere - a run of 11 defeats in 12 games cost Andy Crosby his job in March, with Wild stepping in but his fortunes have not been much better. The win last time out was his first victory since taking over, with just five points from 24 on offer seeing them just about keep their heads above water.
Dons head into the game with their eyes on the prize, knowing a win would be enough to lock in their spot in League One, while also capitalising on Bromley’s defeat on Thursday to move a point clear on top of the table with one game to go.
Warne’s side have lost just three times since the turn of the year, and on home soil only once in the league since the middle of September, boasting the fifth best home record in the division. Tranmere meanwhile sit 16th in the away table, winning only six times away from Prenton Park this season.
Dons could welcome back Luke Offord after he served the final of his four-game ban for the red card away at Salford last month, while Jon Mellish remains out for one more game after his sending off against Bromley.
Earlier this season, Dons overturned a 2-0 deficit in Birkenhead to draw 2-2 with Tranmere, even after Jonathan Leko’s red card with 11 minutes to go to snatch a point.
This will be the 25th meeting between the sides, with Dons claiming 12 wins to Tranmere’s seven, with five draws. One of Dons’ most famous wins came when the sides first met in Milton Keynes, with a Gareth Edds brace ensuring the side kept their place in League One in 2005 on the final day of the season.
Referee Tom Reeves will take charge of the game. In 38 games this term, he has shown 121 yellows and only one red, awarding ten penalties. Five times he has taken charge of Dons, overseeing just one win, a draw and three defeats - the last of them the opening day defeat last season at the hands of Bradford City at MK1. Tranmere meanwhile have also seen him five times, resulting in four wins and a draw.
Assistants Rob Smith and Adrian Tranter will run the lines with Fourth Official Aaron Farmer.
Bookmakers bet365.com have Dons at 2/5 to win the game and secure promotion, with Tranmere at 13/2 and 7/2 the draw.
