'Awkward' transfer deadline could see business wrapped up for lunch

Tuesday night’s 11pm deadline comes around an hour after most teams will have finished playing

With the transfer deadline falling on a night when a lot of EFL clubs are playing games, Paul Warne anticipates most will have their business wrapped by lunch-time tomorrow (Tuesday).

While MK Dons will have a watching brief on Tuesday night - their game with Wigan Athletic moved 24 hours later to Wednesday - Warne will be at a game rather than in the Stadium MK war room frantically working on last-minute deals to get over the line.

A full EFL round of fixtures will be played over the course of the next three days, encompassing the close of the window which comes at 11pm on Tuesday night.

Warne said with the majority of clubs turning their attentions to the games in front of them, he expects the majority of the work to be done well ahead of time, making for a potentially quiet rolling down of the shutters.

“It’s a strange day (to have the deadline) so I’d expect most of the business to be done by midday on Tuesday,” he said. “Normally, when you see behind the scenes, there’s a lot of calls and chatter going on, potential deals happening. With so many fixtures happening on Tuesday night, it makes things a lot more awkward.

“It’s very odd that it’s on Tuesday night. I had it one year where I was managing away at Nottingham Forest, I had a player signed and then in the warm-up they told me he’s changed his mind and gone somewhere else. It’s a bit mental!

“On Tuesday, Richie and I are going to watch Wycombe play Sheffield Wednesday, which is a good opportunity for us to watch next week’s opposition, but my phone will be beside me.”

Having brought in eight new faces to the squad thus far though, Warne said there is always more business to be done and hopes he can do a bit more business before time us up.

He added: “There are always deals to be done, I want more pace and athleticism. You could see how athletic you have to be in this game now, so if I can get some more youthful legs in there to help the experience and the quality we already have, then we have to investigate.”
