Cheltenham boss relieved to hear full-time whistle at Stadium MK
Cheltenham Town’s manager was critical of his side after the 5-0 defeat to MK Dons
Cheltenham boss Michael Flynn could not wait for the final whistle at Stadium MK on Saturday as his side were thumped 5-0 by MK Dons.
First-half goals from Jack Sanders, Alex Gilbey and Callum Paterson were added to by Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and Aaron Nemane in the second as Paul Warne’s side ran riot against the hapless Robins, still seeking their first points of the season.
The ex-Newport County manager was critical of his side, and felt Dons bettered them in every area at MK1, leaving him relieved at full-time.
“I was glad when that whistle went,” Flynn said afterwards. “It was nowhere near good enough, and the manner in which we conceded was really poor.
“(Dons) picked up first and second balls, they kept the ball better than us, defended and put their bodies on the line, they tracked their runners. We didn’t get a free shot.
“I won’t say they wanted it more than us, because we want to win, but it’s the manner in which they ran all over us.”
He continued: “Every goal came from our own mistakes. In the first-half, a corner, a free-kick, our throw, it’s not good enough. In the second-half, we gave it away, the lad has a shot from the edge of the box. It’s not good enough, we know that, and we have to react.
“It was easy (for MK Dons). Let’s not dress it up. The manner in which we conceded was too easy. It gave us a mountain to climb, and it’s the manner of it too.
“I’m really disappointed and we have to improve sharpish. We're only three games in, so I'm not too down, but this was a big slap in the face and very unlike us.”
