Ex-Chelsea defender linked with League One job ahead of MK Dons game

The former Arsenal and Chelsea full-back is reported to have had talks with the League Two champions

Ex-England international Ashley Cole has been linked with taking over at MK Dons’ next opponents Bromley.

The Ravens parted ways with Andy Woodman after five-and-a-half years last Thursday just a few months after he guided the side to promotion and the League Two title.

After their 1-1 draw with Peterborough at the weekend, Bromley head to Stadium MK on Tuesday night still needing a new boss, and former Chelsea full-back has been reported to have had talks about taking over at Hayes Lane.

Having had an impressive playing career, racking up more than 700 professional games and 107 international caps, Cole’s coaching resume has been strong too. Since retiring in 2019, he has taken up backroom jobs at Derby County and Chelsea, working under Frank Lampard. He spent time with England U21s, working under Lee Carsley, before jobs at Everton and Birmingham City.

He rejoined the England fold, again working under Carsley following Gareth Southgate’s departure as boss of the national team, before taking up his first head coaching job when he took over at Serie B side Cesena in March, remaining there until the end of the season.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, the 45-year-old has held talks with Bromley about the position though he is unlikely to be in post ahead of their trip to MK1 on Tuesday night.
