Goode targets more goals after his Bromley cracker
The defender scored the goal of the night in Dons’ 4-1 win over Bromley
Adding goals to his game is on Charlie Goode’s to-do list even though he is MK Dons’ second highest scorer this season.
The defender wrapped home a cracker for his third of the campaign, tucking him behind Aaron Collins in the scoring charts thus far. The Welshman, for note, is on 12.
Goode’s excellent strike with 11 minutes to go in the 4-1 win over Bromley came as something of a surprise to even his own team-mates, with the centre-back racing onto a cut-back on the edge of the box to finish with finesse and style.
He was kicking himself afterwards for not walking off with a brace too, putting a near-post header over the bar from just a couple of yards.
After seeing centre-back cohort Marvin Ekpiteta finish last season with six goals to his name, Goode said getting amongst the goals is something he has been challenged to do, and that his Bromley goal was a step in the right direction.
“The reaction from the lads says it all,” Goode said. “I’m not normally up in that position. The ball went down the side, I was screaming at Collo for the cutback, I wasn’t really expecting it but my eyes lit up, I put the inside of my foot through it. I’m buzzing with it!
“I had a chance at the end, and that will eat away at me, and I know the gaffer will mention it first thing on Thursday to me, rightly so. It should’ve been a goal.
“Scoring goals is massive. The manager has said many times that in the tight games, it can come down to set piece goals, second phases, something like that which can get you a win.
“With my size and the amount of deliveries we get into the box, I should be getting more goals. Hopefully there are more to come.”
Tuesday night’s win is Dons’ third win in ten days, seeing them pick up nine points out of a possible 12, with the only blot on the copybook coming in Blackpool last week. The run has seen Paul Warne’s side lift themselves out of the drop zone and into a more comfortable 14th spot, but it is still a far cry from where they have set their sights this season.
Both Warne and Goode said Dons’ first-half display against Bromley was not up to par, despite only going in level thanks to a heavily deflected free-kick in stoppage time to make it 1-1, but the bounce back in the second-half and the momentum the side now has has given the club a huge lift.
Goode said: “I don’t think we were that good in the first-half. In a weird way, their goal gave us a kick to be better in the second. It’s always good to get four goals at home but if we’re properly at it, we could score so many more.
“Where we were before Luton, struggling for a win with a lot of draws, to suddenly get three out of four is great. And it should have been four out of four.
“The longer we went without a win, it would always have to be the question you asked. To get it out the way is great but we’ve got some catching up to do. We’ve played a lot of tough teams but we’ve got games now where we feel we can go on a charge.
“We’re still not happy with where we are and we have to back it up on Saturday.”
