Hamann is eager to see former club MK Dons reach the Championship
‘The Kaiser’ wants to see his former club continue their upward progression
World Cup finalist Dietmar Hamann said he is delighted to see former club MK Dons back in League One.
The German came out of retirement to join Karl Robinson’s Dons as player-coach in 2010, playing 13 games for the club before departing for Leicester City for another coaching job.
His short time in Milton Keynes though left a lasting impression on the Champions League winner. Speaking to Andy’s Bet Club, the ‘Kaiser’ said he is keen to see Dons not just settle in League One but push on for the Championship this season.
“It's great to see him back in League One, hopefully we see them climbing back into the Championship this season.
“I think we've seen with Wrexham what can be done, that can be their target and the target of lots of clubs. It's just a bit of funding, just a bit of investment.”
Hamann’s arrival at MK1 came just a few years after Stadium MK first opened but it remains one of the top stadiums in the division. Having that as a lure has been of great benefit for the club over the years, he said, helping attract some of the top players.
He continued: “Obviously we're going back more than ten years now, but everything is in place. The platform was there and it was down to the chairman, Pete Winkelman, who I think left the club a few years ago.
“MK Dons have great infrastructure with the stadium there. I think it would have been a host stadium for the World Cup if England had got it years ago when I was there. I think it's a fantastic venue. The facilities, everything is top-notch. And, you know, especially in the lower leagues, when players go there, it can be the deciding factor, maybe getting a player.
“Obviously, it's down to wages as well, getting a player or not getting him. They have probably got a little advantage there. In that respect, hopefully they can use it.”
