Mixed emotions for Warne after MK Dons draw for a sixth time in seven

MK Dons boss Paul Warne spoke after his side’s 0-0 draw with AFC Wimbledon

A sixth draw in seven games left Paul Warne with a strange feeling of disappointment and satisfaction after the goal-less draw between MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon.

In a tense game at Plough Lane, neither side were able to break the deadlock in the first encounter between the clubs since January 2025.

There were chances at both ends though, with Dons keeper Will Dennis making two key saves, one in each half, while AFC Wimbledon keeper Josef Bursik had to keep out both Sam Nombe and Callum Paterson efforts.

Still only beaten once this season, Dons’ search for a League One victory extends though, with the side not in action in the division now until Saturday October 10 and the visit of Reading to Stadium MK.

Speaking afterwards, Warne said he had mixed feelings about another draw.

“I’m not disappointed but I’m not buzzing,” he said. “If we want to get promoted, into the top six at least, we have to turn reasonable away performances into results. Nil-nil is disappointing but I’d have taken it over a defeat, obviously.

“I don’t think we had enough quality on our set-pieces, and enough guile in the final third. I liked us in the second-half, our box-to-box play was really good.

“In the first-half, we were running into each other too much. But in the second-half we moved the ball really well, we got into pockets and got down the side of them, it was just the final pass, the final cross that wasn’t up to the level to help us win.

“Everyone gave everything they could, but it was edgy so no-one wanted to make a mistake. If a team had scored earlier on, a game would have been a bit more risk-free, I think.”

He continued: “We’re good at draws… the clean sheet is a positive but the overall feeling in the dressing room is that we need to be better. We weren’t celebrating a point, especially with that second-half performance. You’d have taken a point after that if we’d won two or three before.

“We just need to turn them into wins now, we desperately need to be sharper in the final third because we look a bit blunt.”
