More changes expected when Dons take on the Chairboys

MK Dons head coach Paul Warne spoke ahead of Saturday’s game against Wycombe Wanderers

Shuffling the pack is likely on the agenda for Paul Warne ahead of MK Dons’ trip to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

After naming an unchanged side for the opening three League One games of the season, Dons made three changes for the trip to Wigan Athletic, but they did not pay off in the least they slumped to a dismal 3-1 defeat at the Brick Community Stadium.

While the introductions of Jack Sanders, Ryan Barnett and Callum Paterson did not have the desired effect for Warne, any number of changes could be on the cards for this Saturday’s trip to Buckinghamshire rivals Wycombe.

“I made changes in the week because I thought we’d cause Wigan more problems,” Warne said. “Marv (Ekpiteta) was a little tight, Geth (Jones) had put in unbelievable numbers in the first few games, and it’s always nice to be able to change at wing-back.

“If we’d have won, I’d have not really thought about any changes. After a comprehensive defeat, selection needs addressing for everyone. That’s not what we want to live by and we want to improve.”

The sides go into the fixture as the bottom two in League One, both seeking their first wins of the season at the fifth time of asking.

The Chairboys bolstered their front line in the closing stages of the transfer window, and were watched by the Dons boss during their 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

Warne said: “I know how well they played against Sheffield Wednesday the other night, especially in the second-half, they were excellent.

“They’ve brought in two new strikers so it will be a tall ask but if you’re going to be successful, you need to be good away from home. It’s a good opportunity to put right the wrongs of Wednesday.

“They’ve struggled to score goals but they’ve got a strong front four now. There are no bad teams in this league, if you play someone on their day, it’s trouble.

“We’ve got to up our levels for Saturday. We’re playing against a much more experienced team, built to get out of this league. We’ve got to be up for it and we’ve got to tweak things to be in with a chance.

“I always appreciate our away following, and if we can put on a performance then all the better. If we don’t, as always, we roll onto the next one.

“It’s a local derby so it adds a little bit more for the team.”
