Win and you're up - what MK Dons need to secure automatic promotion on Saturday
The club are right on the brink and could wrap it all up at Stadium MK
MK Dons could secure their League One status this Saturday at home against Tranmere Rovers.
While the likes of Cambridge, Salford and Bromley all play in the coming days, their results mean little to Dons in anything other than the title race, with an automatic promotion in their hands.
Thanks to results over the weekend, the Ravens, who were given a watching brief after the 0-0 draw with Cambridge last Thursday, sealed the first automatic spot with two games to go but their wait for League Two title remains in the balance.
Dons head into this weekend’s fixtures knowing a point effectively seals their spot in League One with their vastly superior goal-difference over the rest of the chasing pack. Notts County’s defeat to Barnet on Saturday meant the Magpies are now six points adrift of Dons with two to go, but it kicked the door open for Salford to move into fourth spot, with the Ammies five points back of Paul Warne’s men.
However, victory for Dons over struggling Tranmere Rovers would put it beyond any shadow of a doubt. Irrespective of Salford’s result against Bromley on Thursday night, a win would ensure Dons would be at least five points clear of Karl Robinson’s side with just one game remaining.
Defeat for Salford would not mathematically send Dons up either, but it would in all but name. They would no longer be able to catch the side from MK1, but Notts County could still with two wins and two Dons defeats, but they would need to overturn a ten-goal difference.
Should Salford pick up all three points against Andy Woodman’s already promoted side though, Dons would go into Saturday’s clash with Tranmere - barring absolute disaster, the final game at Stadium MK this season - knowing victory would send them to the top of the pile with one game to go.
The absolute disaster scenario though would mean Dons would have to lose both of their remaining games - Tranmere at home and Fleetwood away - with Salford picking up maximum points in both of theirs - Bromley at home and Crawley Town at home. Though even that would also need Cambridge to pick up five points from their remaining three matches, starting tonight at home to Grimsby, before hosting Barrow and finishing the season with a trip to Crewe on the final day.
