Poulter’s points prove pivotal in Walker Cup comeback
The Woburn pro played part in one of golf’s most remarkable turnarounds
Woburn’s Luke Poulter played his part in a dramatic finish to the Walker Cup, which saw Great Britain & Ireland edge out USA.
Trailing 9½-6½ going into the afternoon’s singles session, Dean Robertson’s side conjured up a comeback for the ages which culminated in Englishman Josh Hill securing the winning point on the 18th hole with the last putt of the match to secure GB&I’s first victory in the historic encounter since 2015 at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
Poulter needed to summon some of his dad Ian’s Ryder Cup spirit after losing his foursomes match on Saturday morning alongside Sam Easterbrook by winning his singles match in the afternoon, seeing off Russell Miles 2&1.
The Cup looked to heading across the Atlantic after Sunday's Foursomes saw USA sweep the board, Poulter and Easterbrook beaten 4&3, before a remarkable comeback in the singles.
Poulter’s 3&1 win over Ethan Fang in the second round was the inspiration the team needed as they went on to claim a stunning 7-2 wash of the board to swing momentum back in GB&I’s favour.
With only two matches left out on the course, USA only needed a point to retain the trophy while GB&I needed one and a half points to win the match outright.
Connor Graham secured an important half-point in his match against Miles Russell, coming back from 3-down at the 11th, to win the last with a birdie and leave Josh Hill requiring a point against Tyler Watts in the last match on course.
Chipping close on the 18th, Hill calmed holed out to delight the thousands of fans thronging around the green to win the Cup.
