Black Cats midfielder Matete completes MK Dons move

Dons have added a second midfielder to their ranks

MK Dons have completed their second signing in less than 24-hours with the transfer of Jay Matete.

The 24-year-old joins from Premier League Sunderland on a permanent transfer, less than a day after Dons make their first signing, that of Huddersfield midfielder Ben Wiles.

Matete has nearly 150 career appearances under his belt, including 30 alongside Gethin Jones and Aaron Collins on loan at Bolton Wanderers last season.

In joining the club, Matete said: “I’ve had some really good chats with the gaffer, discussing the way he sees me fitting into his team, the way I see myself expressing my abilities and helping the team is the most important thing. I cannot wait to get going on the pitch now.

“I’m only 24 but I’ve played a lot of football, I know how the games pan out. I hope I can bring that experience to the team and help us bring home three points on a regular basis, that’s my aim.

“I want to get MK Dons up the leagues. There is a really good project, some really good ambition here and I got a really good feeling about it, and I want to be there throughout the journey.”

A battling midfielder capable of playing in the number 6 and number 8 roles, Matete believes his attributes will suit what has been asked of him by head coach Paul Warne.

He continued: “I’m tenacious, I like getting on the ball and getting stuck in, I think that’s what the fans can expect from me. I like being in the thick of things, that’s where I’m the happiest.

“I’ve played in League Two before, it’s physical and challenging but you can still enjoy it. It’s all about winning at the end of the day.

“We’re half-way through the season, there is so much football still to be played but we have an idea of what’s going on around us. The key thing is staying consistent, churning our games and getting results.

“Our aim is to get us out of the league, it won’t be easy but we’ve got a lot of experience, a lot of boys who have been promoted before. If we can combine it all together, we’ve got a great chance of getting out this league.”
