Cod Army will want to be Dons' party-poopers in League Two finale

MK Dons boss Paul Warne spoke ahead of his side’s final game of the season against Fleetwood Town

Knowing they could win the League Two title, Fleetwood Town will be out to spoil MK Dons’ party on Saturday.

Victory for Paul Warne’s side, or at the very least matching Bromley’s result at home to Walsall on the final day of the season, will see the side from Milton Keynes lifting the League Two trophy at 5pm, what would be their first since 2008 and the first win Warne’s career both as a player and a manager.

Having secured automatic promotion last week in front of more than 13,000 at Stadium MK, the scenes of celebration on home soil were a special occasion but Warne said watching someone else celebrate on your pitch is one of the more blood-boiling scenarios football can offer up.

Fleetwood know they can spoil the party with a victory over Dons and a positive result for the Ravens in London, and irrespective of the scenario, the hosts will want to end their season on a high.

“They’re all professionals, they’re not used to losing,” he said. “If I was in (Fleetwood’s) dressing room, I’d be desperate not to let the us celebrate the league title on our ground. I said the same thing to our lads before the Bromley game: do not let them celebrate promotion on our pitch, that is the worst.

“You don’t want anyone to celebrate their greatness in your home. It’s different when you can just get out but when it’s your stadium it’s just having your nose rubbed in it.”

Going into the game, 15th place Fleetwood can climb no more than a place with victory. Following the appointment of Matt Lawlor in charge though, they have stabilised and become regular drawer of games, with their current record reading 15 wins, 15 draws and 15 losses this season.

Warne continued: “Hopefully, we have too much. Our away record is the best in the league, and if we are at our very best, we’re difficult to stop.

“In the same manner though, if we’re slightly off it and Fleetwood are at their best we’re in trouble. We’ve got to show them the utmost respect. They’ve got youth and enthusiasm in their team and a little bit of experience too and hopefully we’ll have all the answers.”

Knowing the job at hand though, the head coach said he will be fully focussed on his side’s performance in Lancashire, with the game at Hayes Lane between Bromley and Walsall not something he wants to keep an eye on unless he absolutely has to.

“It’s in our hands, so we just have to set out and win,” he added. “Don’t get me wrong, if we’re 2-0 in 20 minutes, I’ll want to know what Bromley are doing. That’s just nosiness! I hope our lads deal with what we have to deal with.

“If the fans start singing for no reason, I’ll have a feeling I’ll know what’s going on. On the whole, I’ll probably just be concentrating on us.”
