Warne points at fellow League One newcomers' struggles after Woodman axe

Paul Warne gave his reaction to Andy Woodman’s exit from fellow League One newcomers Bromley

The departure of Andy Woodman from League Two champions Bromley just ten games into the new campaign has shown the cut-throat nature of football, and someone all-too aware of that is MK Dons boss Paul Warne.

Like Bromley, Dons have found the transition into League One tough this season, and sit just a point above the Ravens in the standings.

With Notts County, another promoted side, only sat one point above Dons, it leaves on Cambridge United as the outlier of the sides which came up, sitting fourth on 20 points, double that of County.

“The four teams that have come up all had ambitions to attack the league,” Warne said. “But the only outlier is Cambridge who have started well. Bromley, Notts County and MK have not hit the heights we all would have wanted. When you go up a level, it sometimes takes time to adapt.

“I understand the pressure of winning is bigger than ever. In football, you quickly forget what happened three days ago. Leicester have won back-to-back, they’re all of a sudden on the edge of the play-offs but after back-to-back defeats Russell (Martin) was on the chopping block.

“Everyone wants a winning team, it’s just a much easier thing to do to replace the manager. Doesn’t mean you’ll get improved results or style of play but currently it’s what happens.

“I was surprised (by Woodman’s departure) first and foremost, and then sadly not surprised. That’s the sad reality of football. He brought a team up, won the title, you would think he would get a bit of leeway.

“I feel for him because he’s had five really good years there and he’ll be remembered there fondly.”
