Rear-wing woes send Verstappen into a Silverstone spin

Verstappen’s race ended in the gravel in front of Lando Norris’ grandstand at Silverstone

A problem with the RB22’s rear wing sent Max Verstappen spinning into retirement in the closing stages of Sunday’s British Grand Prix.

It was a weekend to forget for Red Bull on the whole, despite the Silverstone circuit being just 23 miles from their Tilbrook factory, with Verstappen 16 seconds off the pace in Saturday’s sprint race, only good enough for sixth place, before his spin at Stowe sent him out of fourth place the following day.

Out-qualified by team-mate Isack Hadjar, Verstappen started seventh but leapt to fifth off the start. Running longer than those around him in the first stint, he put himself into contention for a podium spot. But when home crowd favourite Lewis Hamilton pitted under the virtual safety car, it left the Dutchman vulnerable to an attack - one which the Brit completed around the outside of Brooklands.

Another stop brought Verstappen back within sight of Hamilton in the closing stages but it looked as though fourth was in the bag before a spin at Stowe with six laps to go forced him out.

Much like his spin in qualifying in Austria a week prior, Verstappen pointed at an issue with RB22’s rear-wing which tipped him into a similar spin at Silverstone.

“ It’s not been the outcome we wanted from this weekend,” he said. “Right from the start we struggled with balance and top speed in comparison to Isack’s car.

“We were fighting for P3 towards the end of the race but had a similar issue to qualifying in Austria. It was a different fault with the rear wing, where it would not fully attach, meaning we lost a lot of downforce and spun off the track.

“I hope the coming weeks are better, and that we can sort things about before Spa.”
