Simple tips to help protect your home from burglaries, according to Thames Valley Police detectives in Milton Keynes
Crime detectives from Thames Valley Police have shared useful advice to help Milton Keynes residents deter burglars and keep their homes safe.
As the days get shorter and the evenings get darker, Thames Valley Police detectives from the Priority Crime Team have shared some simple tips to help residents protect their homes.
A spokesperson from the team of detectives said: “We spend our days investigating burglaries and supporting victims, so we know just how upsetting it can be when someone invades the place you're meant to feel safest: your home.
“As the evenings get darker and we're all settling into cosy nights indoors, we wanted to share a few simple ways to give your home some extra protection.”

Simple tips to protect your home:
- A home that looks occupied can be less appealing to offenders. Using a timer switch or leaving a lamp on can help create the impression that someone is home, even when you're out.
- Alarms can be a great deterrent. A visible house alarm can make a property a less attractive target and provide extra peace of mind.
- Ask yourself what a stranger sees. Small things like parcels left at the door, an overflowing letterbox, or a house in complete darkness can sometimes suggest nobody is home.
- Look out for one another. Keeping an eye on a neighbour's property when they're away and reporting anything suspicious can help keep communities safe.
The spokesperson added: “We know the impact these offences can have on victims and their families. While the responsibility always lies with the offender, there are steps we can all take to reduce opportunities for crime and help keep our neighbourhoods safe.”
