Jonny Williams hopes Dons' fortunes turn around

It has been something of a baptism of fire for Jonny Williams since signing on loan with MK Dons, but he feels there is a lot more to come from his new team-mates.

The 22-year-old signed on the eve of the Bolton game and made his debut at the Macron Stadium only to see Dons humbled 3-1 by the Championship’s bottom club.

And he came on as a substitute in the 5-1 FA Cup defeat to Chelsea on Sunday, making it two defeats from two in his short time at stadium:mk.

But despite the disappointment of his first 10 days at the club since signing from Crystal Palace on loan, the Welshman feels Dons have what it takes to stay up this season.

“It has been a tough start for me, but the only way is up,” he admitted. “We’ve got some great players here and a good team spirit which will keep up above that relegation line. We’re feeling positive about the league situation.

“I’ve never been in this position before, but I took it as a new challenge. It’ll be a test of the strength of character, I’m excited to be a part of it.

“I’ve come here to help keep Dons up and get some games. It has been good coming in. They’re a great group of lads, all very down to Earth.

“It’s a pleasure to work with them, as are the manager, Richie Barker and Keith Andrews.”

Williams’ appearance against Premier League champions Chelsea was fleeting and came when Dons were already training 5-1. Despite the result coming as little to shock to most of the footballing world, Williams admitted the players were downbeat in the dressing room, unhappy with the manner of this thrashing.

“We went out there with nothing to lose. The fans were incredible and made a real difference. It’s a great occasion for the club and everyone here.

“But it could have been even more to be honest. They were miles better than us.

“Their team is full of world class players, but we’re all down after the game. It’s tough, especially when you’re chasing and losing like that at home. It’s hard to take.

“But there was a positive in that we scored a goal, even if it was deflected.

“But we’re just looking forward to Cardiff now, which is a bigger game for us to be honest.

“It’s not nice getting beaten 5-1. Every game means a lot, especially at home, and on TV.

“The game was a bonus for us. It was nice to be involved, but hopefully we aren’t on the end of too many more of those results any time soon.”
