Dons 'let themselves down with the basics' in draw with Peterborough
MK Dons boss Paul Warne spoke after his side’s fifth draw in six games as they drew 1-1 with Peterborough United
The basics and fundamentals of the game let MK Dons down on Saturday as they drew 1-1 with Peterborough, Paul Warne said.
Leading through Aaron Collins’ goal on the half-hour mark, substitute Christopher Conn-Clarke’s 85th minute header snatched a point for Posh as Dons had to accept a fifth draw in six matches on their return to League One.
Sitting deeper in the final 20 minutes, inviting pressure, goalkeeper Will Dennis’ goal was not under huge threat but eventually the pressure told, something which disappointed Warne at the full-time whistle.
“We’re here to be at the top end of the table competing and we’re letting ourselves down with the basics,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve been as good as I’d have liked. I expect us to be better in a lot of the games. We’ve only lost one but it’s better to lose and then win repeatedly.
“I think our best performance was against Oxford, then Huddersfield and Leicester were difficult teams. Today was winnable and we put ourselves in a better position. It was the first time we’ve scored first.
“It feels like there’s a bit of tension chasing the win, and maybe it spilled over into some of our play today.
“Out of all the draws we’ve had, I think this is the saddest. The lads are disappointed not to see it through. Peterborough are a really good side, but I don’t think they were a real threat.
“I don’t think Will was making worldie saves, they had a few shots from the edge of the box. That said, until you get a second goal, the opposition will keep plugging away.
“We had chances to get a second goal, but we didn’t. The bit that upsets me though is that our basics weren’t very good. We can’t expect to have to score two or three every week to win a game. I’d expect us to have a little more energy come the end, we just looked flat.
“At times today, we created some really good opportunities, they just fizzled out. In the second-half, we got into good areas but our crosses hit the keeper which is frustrating.
“And then it was a sucker punch at the end, and that’s not to say Peterborough didn’t deserve anything, they possibly did, I just don’t think our goal was under massive threat. But we didn’t have a real grip of it in the last 20 minutes.
“They won more aerial and ground duels, and I think we sunk too deep. They asked a lot of questions of us, and we answered a lot of them but fundamentally we didn’t win and we have to address that.”
