Goalkeeper and defensive numbers on MK Dons transfer wishlist

The MK Dons boss wants two players in every position

Defensive recruits are high on the agenda for MK Dons in the next few weeks.

Having added six players to the squad this summer, only two of them are defenders, and they were the first two through the door in the form of Charlie Goode and Cohen Bramall.

Since then, midfielders Dan Barlaser and Ryan Wintle, striker Sam Nombe and winger Sam Silvera have all come through the doors at Stadium MK.

While the full-back/wing-back areas have been high priority positions to fill for the recruitment team throughout the summer, even dating back to the January window, Warne is keen to bring in some more on the left side in particular, but also cover even further back.

Craig MacGillivray remains the only senior goalkeeper on the club’s books now just a week away from the Carabao Cup opener against Norwich City, and though he was the club’s out-and-out first choice last season, his concussion injury suffered against Bromley last season left Dons somewhat exposed, with only Connal Trueman - now at Sheffield Wednesday - in support.

With that in mind, Warne said he is keen to add another keeper to the ranks too, not just to support the Scottish shot-stopper but to push him for top status.

“I’m happy but I feel we need to strengthen,” he said. “I want to add in the goalkeeping department. That’s not to say I don’t think Craig hasn’t been excellent, it only takes one blow.

“We just need a little bit more defensive cover. On the left, we’ve only really got Cohen who can naturally play there. Ideally I want two players in every position.”

The addition of Silvera came on Friday evening, and he is yet to fully integrate with the side after they played against Kuwait SC earlier in the day before heading to Cheltenham on Saturday for their final friendly game of the season.

Set to link up with the side properly on Monday, Warne said of Silvera: “Sam had the joys of running up and down the pitch yesterday (Friday) which cheered the lads up no end! He’ll join the group on Monday.

“He’s someone I’ve been courting all summer, I’ve been in contact with him to convince him to come. Fortunately, I have. He definitely strengthens the top-line, and I’ll try and strengthen it again in the next few weeks.”
