Tranmere pass the pressure onto their rivals ahead of MK Dons trip

A win in the week for Tranmere Rovers has moved them out of reach of the drop zone

Tranmere Rovers boss Pete Wild says his side are not out of the woods yet despite their midweek win over Cheltenham Town moving them four points clear of the relegation zone with two games to go.

The 3-1 triumph at Whaddon Road ended a 12-game winless run for Rovers, who had slumped right into the jaws of the relegation battle, threatening to send them back to the National League eight years they returned to the EFL.

Rovers head to Milton Keynes on Saturday to take on a Dons side who know a win will secure them automatic promotion, but even defeat could still be enough to ensure Tranmere’s safety should results elsewhere go their way.

Manager Wild though said they cannot afford to think they are safe and must try to get something at Stadium MK to make sure.

"That puts the pressure back on the people below us and they're probably looking at the result and going, 'where have they pulled that from?'" he told BBC Radio Merseyside on Tuesday night.

“It chucks the ball. It's been us that's been under pressure for weeks on end and now it chucks the pressure back on them.

“It's clearly not done yet and we have to go to MK Dons and dust them down and try and get them to go again because it's going to be a tough ask against a team that can get promoted on Saturday dinnertime.”

With two games to go, Harrogate Town and Barrow currently occupy the bottom spots in League Two on 36 points, with Newport County just outside the drop zone with 37 points, and Crawley Town have 38 points, while Tranmere sit on 40.
