Bletchley mark return to Manor Fields with pre-season victory
The Maroons were able to play on home soil once again
Bletchley finally returned to Manor Fields on Saturday in winning style with 31-19 pre-season victory over Datchworth.
Both sides showing plenty of attacking intent and defensive resilience, with the home side eventually coming out on top.
From the opening exchanges, Bletchley carried the ball with real purpose, consistently making the gain line and putting Datchworth under pressure. The Bletchley forwards worked hard to secure possession, and whenever they were able to string together a number of phases, they provided a solid platform for the backs to attack from.
Datchworth, however, were particularly impressive at the breakdown. Their ability to compete over the ball and jackal effectively caused Bletchley problems, with a number of penalties being awarded for holding on. This gave Datchworth opportunities to relieve pressure and keep themselves in the contest.
As the game developed, Bletchley’s ability to build pressure through the forwards began to create space out wide. With a steady platform established, the backs were able to unleash their pace and attacking ability, and the tries began to come.
Datchworth responded with a determined and effective close-range game of their own. Their pick-and-go from the base of the ruck, particularly when attacking from around five metres out, repeatedly tested the Bletchley defence. The pressure eventually told on occasions, with Datchworth converting their opportunities close to the line into tries.
Bletchley also found success through their driving maul from the lineout. The forwards’ ability to set the maul and gain good ground put Datchworth’s defence under considerable pressure, and one of Bletchley’s tries came directly from this effective attacking weapon.
Overall, it was a hard-fought encounter with both teams showing different strengths. Bletchley’s strong carries, forward platform and effective driving maul provided the foundation for their attacking play, while Datchworth’s work at the breakdown and relentless pick-and-go attack kept the Bletchley defence busy throughout.
Despite Datchworth’s continued pressure and their strong work at the breakdown and around the Bletchley line, the home side held firm when it mattered.
