Six months on: Makewell’s Private CAMHS service is getting young people help in weeks, not years

Makewell’s nurse-led service for 8–25 year olds has supported many children, teenagers and young adults since launching in July 2026.

Six months after launch, Makewell’s Private CAMHS service in Bradwell Abbey is giving young people with mild to moderate mental health concerns something many families have been told to wait years for: an assessment within two weeks of referral.

Since opening in July 2026, the service has received many referrals and supported many young people aged 8 to 25 with anxiety, low mood, emotional regulation and other mental health difficulties.

Why the service was needed

Makewell launched Private CAMHS in response to the pressure on NHS children’s mental health services, where long waits for young people are widely reported. Too many families were watching problems grow while they waited.

The service focuses on young people with mild to moderate mental health concerns - the group most likely to wait longest, and the group where early help can make the biggest difference.

How it works

  • Fast access: young people are assessed within two weeks of referral being received.

  • Open referrals: families can refer themselves, or a GP, school, SENCO or other professional can refer.

  • A team around the young person: experienced mental health professionals work together as a multidisciplinary team.

  • A different kind of setting: support takes place at Makewell’s site in Bradwell Abbey, which includes therapy horses, giving young people a calmer, less clinical environment.

The difference six months in

  • Every patient has been seen within the 2-week period

  • Every patient has gone on to receive therapeutic sessions with the Makewell team

  • Some have gone on to full ADHD or Autism assessments

One family who are using this service said “For the first time in our very difficult journey we were seen, heard and supported. I was so worried my son would struggle to talk and get his struggles across, but the nurse was more like his friend, and he opened up so much more than he ever has to me, his mother. Makewell I can only describe as a little piece of heaven that has fallen from the sky. Thank you – you really made a difference to my little family”

What they say

Jane Lambert, Founder and CEO of Makewell, said: “When we launched this service, we made one promise to families: you won’t be left waiting while things get worse. Six months on, we’re keeping that promise.

“We’ve seen young people go from not leaving their bedroom to getting back into school. We’ve seen parents finally sleep, because they know someone is in their corner. That’s what early help does.

“As a nurse and a mum, I know how frightening it is to watch your child struggle and not know where to turn. Every family deserves to be heard quickly. That’s why we’re here.”
