"He's exactly what we wanted": Warne waxes lyrical about keeper Dennis
The 26-year-old has made a seamless transition in the MK Dons first-team
Goalkeeper Will Dennis has hit the ground running exactly as Dons boss Paul Warne wanted since his summer move from Bournemouth.
The 26-year-old came into the side in the middle of September just a couple of weeks after moving from the south coast club, and has been between the sticks as Dons’ form has taken a noticeable upturn in recent weeks.
Stepping in ahead of Craig MacGillivray, who has been out for the last month with a shoulder issue, was always set to be a big ask of anyone, especially given the high regard Warne held the Scot for his performances last season en route to automatic promotion.
But with Dennis highly thought of following his time on loan at Leyton Orient last season, helping the O’s retain their League One status on loan from the Cherries, Warne said the keeper has done everything expected of him so far.
“He’s exactly what we wanted,” Warne said. “He has come in to compete with Craig and you want it to be as seamless as possible.
“It sounds awful to say, but you want to be able to get through interviews without ever talking about your goalkeeper, because then he’s great, isn’t he! On the other hand, you want to be talking about your centre-forward all the time.
“He’s virtually been faultless. He’s everything I want from a goalkeeper. He comes for things, he’s aggressive, I want him to be positive. He’s adapted to what we have asked him to do, his kicking is good. He’s a great kid, he’s really vocal. I could not be happier with his start.
“You’ve got to take risks to get up the pitch. I’m not a coach who wants 700 passes to get a shot, I want to attack teams. So I don’t mind putting the ball in risky positions, and I don’t mind if my keeper can throw it out.”
